About this recipe

Feeling nostalgic and want to bite into a big fat juicy burger? This vegan fast food burger recipe is really quick and easy to make – 6 ingredients, plus sauces, and it only takes 15 minutes to make!

Most of us get cravings for junk food sometimes. Although I eat healthily most of the time, I just love to succumb to temptation every now and then – it’s good for the soul! As long as it doesn’t have animal products in it, I’m game for pretty much anything… “Fish” and chips, pizza, focaccia, pasties, pies, kebabs, fajitas, vegan sausage rolls… Not very good for you, but soooo tasty! One of our favourites is burger night. We make a big do of it, and make a big pan of homemade oven chips or potato wedges to go with them!

Here on my blog, I publish what I eat, so this kind of stuff also has a place here on Vegan Hot Stuff. I’m a great believer in moderation and will use fake meat in a recipe to prove a point and for those who, like me, see no harm in eating it occasionally.

Two vegan fast food burgers on a grey slate.

When we have a burger night, we all eat vegan – though I’m usually the only vegan at the table. Even the carnivores say this vegan fast food burger is great and that they don’t miss the meat! Prefer your burger with cheese? No problem, try this vegan cheeseburger!

Choose your favourite vegan buns and burgers, and add all your favourite ingredients and sauces! Make a big pan of chips for everyone to dive into, and serve it all with some ice-cold beers!

How to make this vegan fast food burger recipe

Ingredients

Ingredients for making vegan fast food burgers.
  • Vegan burger buns – Use your favourite brand or make your own. If you live in Switzerland, Coop Naturaplan vegan burger buns are easy to find and very good.
Coop bio hamburger buns.
  • Vegan burgers – Use shop-bought vegan burgers or make your own. My favourite used to be the Meatless Farm burger. The only place that sold it here in Switzerland was the Coop, but they decided to remove it from their assortment for some reason. I was pretty cut up about that because I LOVED it, and the ingredients were better than most too. Now, I just make do and get either Beyond Meat or Garden Gourmet Sensational Burgers.
  • Onions – We usually fry slices of yellow onion along with the burgers, but thin slices of raw red onion are a great alternative.
  • Tomato – A slice of any large tomato will do.
  • Gherkin – I like a couple of slices of gherkin in my burger because it reminds me of the gherkin in a Big Mac.
  • Lettuce – Crispy iceberg or green leaf lettuce leaves are great for burgers.
  • Sauces – Go with the classics like ketchup, mayonnaise and mustard. Or be more adventurous and opt for yoghurt & dill sauce, tartare sauce, aioli, horseradish or barbecue sauce. You can usually find vegan versions of all of these. Here on my blog, you’ll find homemade vegan mayonnaise and tartare sauce recipes that are super quick and easy to make.

Preparation – How to assemble your vegan fast food burger

See the step-by-step instructions with photos in the recipe card below.

Vegan burger buns with mustard, vegan fast-food burgers, onion, tomato, gherkin, lettuce, mayonnaise and ketchup.

Make it a vegan cheeseburger! Put a couple of slices of melted vegan cheese in there. For the vegan cheeseburger in the photo below, I used Aldi vegan cheese. It’s one of the few instances where I’ll actually eat shop-bought vegan cheese and I only bought it for the photo really, but I must say that burger was delicious!

What to serve with this vegan fast food burger recipe

Homemade oven chips (fries) or paprika potato wedges with vegan sour cream are the perfect accompaniment for this vegan fast-food burger recipe. For something different, you could make sweet potato chips (fries) or a side salad.

The quantities indicated below are for four people.

Ingredients

  • 4 thick slices of onion

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • freshly ground black pepper

  • salt

  • 4 vegan burgers

  • 4 vegan burger buns

  • mustard (to taste)

  • 4 thick slices of tomato

  • 8 thin slices of gherkin

  • 4 leaves of crispy lettuce

  • mayonnaise (to taste)

  • ketchup (to taste)

Directions

  • Drizzle a little olive oil and sprinkle a small amount of black pepper on both sides of the onion slices.
  • Heat up a non-stick pan (without oil) on a medium heat. When hot, add the burgers and onion rings and gently fry until cooked through and golden brown on both sides. This will probably take about 3 minutes on each side. Turn down the heat if necessary.
  • Cut the burger buns open and lightly toast the tops and bottoms. Spread a thin layer of mustard on the bottom half of each burger bun.
  • Place the cooked burger on the bottom half and top with the onion.
  • Add a slice of tomato and some sliced gherkin.
  • Next, add a leaf of crispy lettuce and some vegan mayonnaise.
  • Put some ketchup on the top half of the burger bun and spread it out. Assemble your vegan fast food burger and enjoy!
